Galvanized steel coils are coated with a layer of zinc, as rust does not attack this protective metal. The outermost layer is all zinc, but successive layers are a mixture of zinc and iron, and the interior is pure steel. These multiple layers are responsible for the metal's amazing properties of withstanding corrosive environments. Zinc also protects steel by acting as a "sacrificial layer". If rust is on the surface of a galvanized steel coil, the zinc will be the first to corrode away. This allows the zinc laid on top of a break or scratch to prevent rust from entering the steel. Galvanized steel coil is an important manufacturing component in countless outdoor, marine or industrial applications.
