Hongguan
347 is similar to 321 stainless steel, which is often used as a stable alternative to type 304. However, in the case of 347, the stabilizer is niobium. This metal strengthens 347's already present ability to withstand intergranular corrosion to its maximum capacity. In addition, niobium allows 347 to be heated repeatedly at temperatures up to 1650°F. As a result, this metal is commonly used in high-temperature equipment such as gaskets and expansion joints, as well as in rocket engines and chemical manufacturing.
In addition to its heat resistance, 347 enjoys better resistance to creep and stress fracture corrosion. This is another advantage of Type 304, as the characteristics of Type 347 may be more suitable for environments where stability is a major concern.
Type 347 is known to be machinable by all common welding techniques, along with hot and cold working. However, when being heat treated, the metal must be heated in the 2100 to 2250°F range. This is due to the fact that 347 cannot be work hardened under heat treatment. Cold reduction is the only way to take advantage of the high temperature properties of this alloy.
