316Ti (UNS S31635) is a titanium-stabilized version of 316 molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel. Compared to traditional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as 304, 316 alloys are more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/cracking corrosion.
They also provide higher creep, stress rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures. High-carbon alloy 316 stainless steels are susceptible to sensitization, which is the formation of grain boundary chromium carbides at temperatures of approximately 900 to 1500°F (425 to 815°C), resulting in intergranular corrosion.
The resistance to sensitization of alloy 316Ti is achieved by the addition of titanium to stabilize the structure and prevent precipitation of chromium carbide, which is the source of sensitization. This stabilization is achieved by medium temperature heat treatment, during which the titanium reacts with carbon to form titanium carbide.
By limiting the formation of chromium carbide, this greatly reduces the susceptibility to sensitization in service. As a result, the alloy can be used at high temperatures for long periods of time without compromising its corrosion resistance. 316Ti has the same resistance to sensitization as the low-carbon version 316L.
