Stainless steel 310 wire excludes the very extreme case where, in its solid state, like all other metals, is polycrystallineーーthat is, it consists of many crystals connected to each other at their boundaries. Stainless steel 310S wires are arranged in planes, called lattices, and they penetrate each other in a specific way. For stainless steel 310 wire, the lattice arrangement can best be visualized by a unit cube with eight iron atoms in its corners. What is important for the uniqueness of steel is the isotropy of ironーーthat is, its existence in two crystalline forms. In the body-centered cubic (bcc) arrangement, there is an additional iron atom in the stainless steel 310S wire. This means that there is more room in the solid solution for foreign (i.e. alloyed) atoms in the fcc than in the bcc structure to hold the 310 stainless steel coil. The importance of stainless steel 310S conductors is that the sides of the face-centered cube, or the distance between adjacent lattices in the fcc layout, is approximately 25% greater than in the bcc layout.
